Roy The 78-Year-Old Champion Brian Mulvaney, Jay Lavender 9781939495044 Books Reviews
A great story to read. There is hope for all of us.
I marvel at someone playing at that level into his late 70's. I'm in my early 70's and have lost quite a bit of distance as I've aged.
Roy's life story is good enough for a book alone...then toss in the match for the club championship at one of the top classical courses in America...this book becomes magical.
Part Final Rounds, part The Match, all pure joy. Roy is a true inspiration!
This little gem is an excellent read. Chronicles the life of a man that is a wonderful role model, someone who always showed initiative, responsibility, and compassion. Secondly, the authors showed a great love and respect for the game of golf. Gives great descriptions of the famed Crystal Downs course. It also demonstrates the great value of friendships and enjoying life for the right reasons. It also is a page turner and finishes quickly.
Loved reading about the history of Roy, great book! Quick read, well done!
Wonderful story about overcoming adversity in ones life to make an impact on so many lives. Knew him personally so I really enjoyed learning his life story. Obviously a great player who played incredibly well at age 78 to beat his son on one of the best golf courses in the country.
Knowing Roy Vomastic for 20 years and now having his life put into perspective by this book is a driving influence for me to keep swinging. Although it is written rather casually and piecemeal its human interest story describing the depth of this humble man is enriching and encouraging. The last section of the hole by hole competition with his son Ed for the Club Championship is exciting and comparable to any of the best golf stories I have read.
What a charming, heartwarming story about Roy Vomastek. Roy is a textbook example of how perseverance and optimism can make so much difference in life. From humble beginnings Roy is thrown several setbacks along the way but his sense of can do and hard work overcome adversity. An added bonus is that the backdrop of the story is the classic Crystal Downs Country Club in Michigan. Mulvaney and Lavender achieve the goldilocks effect in their writing they get it just right. Enough background and context to do the story justice but not too much detail to bog the reader down. 140 pages is just right to tell the story of this delightful gentleman whose optimistic spirit has a positive impact on those lives he touches.
