Raising a Giant Leadership in Network Marketing eBook Bob Crisp Tom Chenault

First - I see this as a very "important" book - a must read for "every" Network Marketing entrepreneur.

As a Business & Financial Consultant (but with a background in both Life Insurance, and Network Marketing), I bought Bob's book because I could "totally relate" to his compelling message. Immediately, I could see some strong similarities

In fact, I knew of Bob Crisp many years ago, because of my first introduction to Network Marketing - Amway, of course - and the famous Dexter Yager, whose home I had the priviledge of visiting, in North Carolina (as I imagine Bob did) - but I don't want to get ahead of myself. :>)

With your permission, a quick background ...

LIFE INSURANCE - Like Bob Crisp, I too, had experience in that industry (both struggles and victories). After working for a Canadian Trust Company, as an Estates Officer, I joined the Life Insurance industry - ended up a member of the Million Dollar Round Table - then, joined the Head Office of an International Life Insurance company, as Training Director. Then, I wanted back in the field, where I set up an office specializing in Estate Planning for a few years, being blessed with much success.

I decided to broaden my scope , and specialize mainly with Health Care Professionals (physicians, dentists, surgeons, holistic practitioners, etc), as a Business & Financial Consultant, studied a lot, and got the necessary credentials to do that at the time.

NETWORK MARKETING - I had always 'known' of this industry, but sort of "shunned" it (for different reasons). I also became a strong "critic" of MLM-Network Marketing. But then, after seeing more and more positive media coverage, and witnessing a growing number of executives and professionals entering the industry - I became intrigued enough to research it.

That was 30+ years ago now (mid 1980's), and I have been a strong ambassador for this industry ever since. Having been associated with a number of different companies, part-time (mostly good ones - but some not so good) - I can truthfully say now, that its "business model" - in my opinion - is one of the finest concepts ever created by the human mind ((but more of that further on)).

DRA - ANMP - I decided to become active within the industry as well, and was priviledged to serve on the Board Of Directors of the industry's professional association for 4-years, representing my country of Canada (it was called the DRA then - Distributor Rights Association - now known as the Association of Network Marketing Professionals - ANMP.com) - which is a global, non-profit organization serving to educate, protect, and support "field" Associates worldwide.

The 'Ups & Downs' - One of the bitter truths I learned (quickly) was this: just because one might have had a high level of success in "one" business / profession / industry - it does NOT mean it is necessarily "transferrable to another"! I have had a "lot" of failures, along with my successes, in my part-time Network Marketing career.

--------------------

The Book - RAISING A GIANT - I was unable to put this book down - all 18 Chapters captured my attention. I found a very "candid" account of the industry - and Bob Crisp's integrity shone brightly throughout. His depth of understanding, and his insight about "people" was a welcome education ((I hope I will "never" stop learning)).

Principles Of Success - The book reminds us that the principles of success are timeless - it talks about the "networks" we all have, and stresses the need for "personal development" to assist in handling the skeptics and cynics out there - and to take the focus off oneself, and instead, concentrate on "helping others" ((..."help enough other people get what they want in life, and you will be blessed with what you want" - the late Zig Zigler)). I've heard it said that Network Marketing is really about "self development, with a nice pay check attached". :>)

Entrepreneurs - One of the messages centers on the fact that Network Marketing is really ENTREPRENEURSHIP - and that means some (roller coaster) "risks" - which are outside of many (perhaps most) people's "comfort zones" - forcing them to "give up" on their DREAM too soon, sadly.

The fact is - "anything" truly worthwhile in this business ((in this life)) will require us - to have some vision - high goals & a mission statement - a system - a right attitude - a team spirit - leadership training - commitment - to practice edification - to align ourselves with good people - unyielding perseverance - to be prepared to pay a PRICE for success.

Then, we will be better able to meet the inevitable challenges, get through the down times, and enjoy success. The same should basically hold true for Network Marketing "uplines / owners / companies / the industry" - and INTEGRITY should always, always reign supreme, and flow from the very top.

Lessons Learned - I really appreciated the way Bob Crisp gave 'Lessons Learned' at the end of most chapters - how he presented the ART -vs- SCIENCE - by studylng, and learning from, the "masters" of the trade - by understanding and managing "egos" - by forming bonds of "trust" - by "never, never, never giving up" (the emotional Kathy Miller story).

Duplication - He covers the critical issue of "keeping things simple" - of "duplication" and "relatability" in this industry - the profitability of "width" -vs- "depth" in building the business (something Dexter Yager always put a lot of attention on) - the importance of "motivation" and "recognition" (when used correctly) - the beauty of "respect" - the "laws of leadership" - overcoming common "objections" - the awesome power of "faith and belief" and of "stories" in this industry - the realities of "failure" (which frankly, cannot occur unless one "quits") - "high tech" -vs- "high touch" ---- on and on ...

You get the picture - he has left no stone unturned in this classic.

The Fall Of A GIANT - His last chapter really "gripped" me - as I too, suffered a very DARK period in my life (that's a "long" story). My heart goes out to this man - there is NO doubt in my mind that he will overcome adversity, and rise to the TOP again - and one of the wonderful things about this industry is - it is one of the most "forgiving" places to be.

-----------------------

MY OWN TAKE on This Industry - I would like to share with you, some personal thoughts about Network Marketing:

I believe the Network Marketing industry is largely misunderstood - especially by the "media". But outside investors, consumers, and intelligent thought leaders are also "taking a hard look" at this industry - to say nothing of the "regulators", who have little knowledge of its actual "business model" ((which most think resembles a PYRAMID Scheme - plain and simple)).

NETWORK MARKETING - The fact is, this has been a proven model for over 65 years - and it brings in over $100-BILLION in sales each year from entrepreneurs operating successfully all over the globe - attracting people from every walk of life.

As an industry, I see Network Marketing being here to stay. On Wall Street and Bay Street - in corporate Board Rooms - in the general business community. It's instantly recognized as: a))- a superior form of eCommerce, b))- a primary way to conduct business, and c))- an efficient means of getting goods & services to end users (customers).

Perhaps more importantly, Network Marketing, as a business model, when used correctly, has changed the lives, the health, and the finances, of tens of thousands (millions) of people - including more and more executives and professionals - by helping them own a better future.
Investment - The (tax deductible) "investment" required to start a Network Marketing business is low compared to a most other businesses - and with far more potential (usually less than $1,000 - often, $500, or even lower) - and for that, you receive an initial supply of "products" to retail, and/or use (of equivalent, or higher, dollar value).

If you're already familiar with it, you'll know that NETWORK MARKETING (MLM / Direct Sales) is about being an entrepreneur, with a "business SYSTEM" ((this kind of business ownership is not about being self employed [like electricians, or architects, health practitioners, attorneys, etc], where there is NO "leverage" factor at play)). If you study Robert Kiyosaki's "Cash Flow Quadrant", you'll understand the radical difference between the two.

If you're not that familiar with it, Network Marketers build their home businesses by bringing in (both retail & wholesale) CUSTOMERS, who love the company's products & services - and by developing "networks" of other MARKETERS (the business T-E-A-M "leverage" factor) - in much the same way that "franchise" operations do.

(3) POWERFUL FACTORS - Few, if ANY, businesses, jobs or professions can offer the three (3) factors of LEVERAGE + COMPOUNDING + RECURRING [on-going] INCOME ("simultaneously") that Network Marketing can - IF one builds it correctly, applying the right business, financial, marketing and ethical principles.

Network Marketing is the "only" way (currently) to benefit from all of these (3) forces, together

RELATIONSHIPS - Network Marketing (-vs- Affiliate Marketing / Internet Marketing / eCommerce Marketing, etc) is a "people" business (as Bob Crisp stresses) - a "relationship based" business model, where people actually "talk" to each other [at some point], and "support" each other - instead of just being "dumped into an Autoresponder" to be blasted every time a "new deal" is being promoted - with NO personal contact. Personally, I much prefer "friendships" - built on TRUST..

Network Marketing is not "perfect" - NO (show me any business or profession that is). And I truly believe that not "everyone" is suited to it (any more than they are to being an entrepreneur, or surgeon). Also, there are those critics who would label ALL MLMs as illegal "pyramids". While there "are" ((so-called)) MLM-Network Marketing companies out there, that might "look" legitimate, many are nothing more than "schemes, scams & pyramids".

MLM-Network Marketing is not "easy" either. Simple, yes - but not easy. However, when compared to "any" other business model, it has enormous advantages: it can enable average people - without large capital resources - or a formal education - or a famous bloodline - but with a large DREAM + a burning DESIRE + a willingness to pay the PRICE - it can enable ordinary people to achieve total "financial" -and- "time" FREEDOM - "together" (a rarity).

There are also a great many well known, highly reputable, successful, "authentic" Network Marketing companies out there, that have been operating, in multiple countries, for decades - and which, when properly evaluated, and selected, can provide an outstanding opportunity (for many people).

DOWNSIDE - Nevertheless, the majority of companies in this industry still need to improve in a few areas, such as: totally "separating" Retail CUSTOMERS from Marketers (REPS) -- having "no incentives" attached to the product purchases -- having "no forced monthly product autoships" (no "pay to play" requirement).

More - They also need - to do away with any "inventory purchase obligations" -- and "costly start-up packs" (in order to qualify for higher pin levels, etc) -- to get rid of the HYPE, and any false promises -- to soften their P&P (Policies & Procedures 'legal agreements'), so as to bring them into the 21st century, as true, respectful, "partnership" agreements between both corporate & the field.

Such changes will enhance the image - please the skeptics, especially the regulators (FTC / SEC / FDA / Industry Canada & RCMP) - and help bring about a more progressive industry - for everybody.
---------------------

I highly recommend Bob Crisp's exceptional book - it needs to be in the library of ALL who seek learning and inspiration - who aspire to greatness.

Sincerely / Peter A.

Good read
Amazing value. Encouragement needed to persist and sharpen leadership skills. I will recommend or give a copy of this book to all my downline as a tool to prepare more leaders in our industry.
Although it was written by a master I had hope to learn more practical applications. It's OK, but a lot of the same old same old. But the time tested same old basics.
